Lord Shiva declared that there would be a competition amongst the deities. Whoever could navigate across the circumference of the earth the quickest, would be worshipped before all other gods and deities. While the other deities took to their chariots and ascended to the skies, in order to win, Ganpathi took a less literal and more philosophical approach. This pleased Lord Shiva and Ganpathi was declared the winner. Lord Vishnu then proclaimed that Ganpathi was to be worshipped before the commencement of any auspicious activity.
Ganpathi also known as 'Vinayak' or the leader, as he leads all the deities and has many different forms, including that of Siddhivinayak - The Accomplisher, Vighnaharta - The Destroyer of Obstacles, Dhandayak - The Bestower of Wealth, Anandayak - The Bestower of Joy.
