Such amulets are created by astrologers on astrologically auspicious dates, by inscribing a Vedic talisman on a thin sheet of bark, known as 'Bhojpatra'. The inscribed talisman could be a numerical grid or a geometric Vedic amulet design, or combination of both. A collection of such grids, representing several different types of Vedic amulet, are often used. The actual design and combination of the talismans used, is only really known to the astrologer who makes the 'Tabeez'. The container may be cylinderical or rectangular in shape and can vary in size, depending on how many sheets of bark are required. These are then placed inside a silver container, usually along with some incense and holy ash or orange coloured powder, (Sindoor). The astrologer will recite the appropriate holy Vedic chants, as the amulet is made. Traditionally the lid of the silver container used to be sealed with wax, but nowadays durable superglues are also used, however care has to be taken so as to not contaminated the inner contents. Such amulets are often worn around the neck, in the form of a locket that is attached to a black thread.
