The New Year is yet another chance for us to get things right. According to an old saying about the first month of the year,
"January is the Monday of months."
'Makar Sankranti' is a significant astrological event that occurs every January. It is the transition of the Sun through the sign of Capricorn or 'Makar'. It signifies the end of the winter solstice month and the beginning of longer daylight hours. The Sun's placement in this zodiac emphasises specific qualities associated with Capricorn's energy, such as ambition, determination and hard work. This is a time of new beginnings, fresh starts and is often considered an auspicious period for spiritual practices, rituals and setting intentions for the coming months.
This year, 'Makar Sankranti' starts from January 14 and continues into February.
Other noteworthy, although not entirely astrologically relevant dates this month include:
Motivation and Inspiration Day, January 2.
Earth's Rotation Day, January 8.
Thank You Day, January 9.
Lohri, January 13. A Hindu festival symbolising gratitude for a bountiful harvest and hope for prosperity in the coming year, centred around a sacred bonfire.
Make Your Dream Come True Day, January 13.
'Makar Sankranti', January 14.
International Day of Education, January 24.
The Chinese New Year, January 29. This is the 'Year of the Snake'.

According to Delhi based writer Nona Uppal, current trends show that Indian youth are turning to astrology to understand dating patterns. Uppal interviews several younger generation Indians to find out their views on the subject.
According to 27-year-old project coordinator Swetha Kumar, “I like to know what to expect. Just knowing an astrological chart helps me understand why I'm attracted to someone.” A similar thought process underlies Devika Oberai’s beliefs, a 24-year-old policy professional based out of New Delhi. “Sun signs help me externalise behaviour. If my partner is behaving a certain way, I can simply think, ‘This is just him being a Taurus’, and that gives me comfort and perspective.”
Molina Singh, a 21-year-old content marketer at YouTube Creators India, based out of New Delhi was of the opinion that astrology is fascinating more as a pop-culture phenomenon rather than as a sense of support. Having grown up with parents, who passed down an interest in zodiac signs to her, she now identifies it as a bonding factor and a core part of her personality.
Car manufacturer Jaguar have come under fire recently after they unveiled their latest electric vehicle as part of their rebranding, but one psychic was not surprised, but rather worried for their future. Psychic Sunaree Ko claims she saw the unsuccessful rebrand in the Tarot cards. Not only that, she claims the cards also show more criticism in Jaguar's future.
The psychic looked at her deck of Tarot cards and saw a tough future for Jaguar. For the past, Ko pulled the Tower card, which she says, "Signifies a dramatic upheaval and destruction of established structures." For the present, she pulled the card associated with conflict and competition. The campaign has sparked chaos and criticism, leaving Jaguar fighting to justify its choices.
Ko added, "The Ten of Swords represents Jaguar's future and things don't appear to be looking up for them". Ko even claims there could be a "Breaking point" coming up. She said, "The Ten of Swords is one of the most challenging cards in the deck, symbolising betrayal, failure, and the end of a cycle. The lack of alignment with their legacy and the overwhelming public disapproval might result in a significant downturn for the brand’s reputation and market presence. The rebrand risks being remembered not as a reinvention, but as a cautionary tale of how not to alienate your core audience."
Emma Glassman-Hughes published her experience of visiting a zodiac based retreat at the StolenTime resort in St. Lucia. Although a self-described sceptic of astrology, Hughes decided to go, despite having reservations.
Of the experience Hughes said, "I do think the astrology element, while not really my thing, does make this vacation package stand out from more generic all-inclusive offerings in similar destinations around the world." Rates start at $805 per night and there are several zodiac inspired activities. Hughes said in conclusion that, "I see the appeal. If I were to do another, I'd hope it would lean into the spirituality even more. I would love a lesson about the connection between the zodiac and the destination, and about the spiritual practices that have shaped the culture of that specific place throughout history, astrologically or otherwise."
The Grand Army Bar in Brooklyn, USA recently launched an astrology-themed menu, according to Patty Dennison, head bartender. The menu contains 12 cocktails, each dedicated to a different zodiac sign. Dennison added that the theme came together via a popular vote, after server Sam Bucci and host Haley Peacock, both avid astrology fans, “Had the clever idea.”
This follows a recent trend where many bars across the U.S. have introduced astrology-themed, or ‘Cosmic’ menus, from the Memphis, Tenn., to the atmospheric Alchemist Garden in Paso Robles, Calif. Recently, one bar in NYC went all out, betting on astrology as its main theme.
