Professional Astrologer vs. AI Predictions

In this modern age of information, you can ask an AI about your horoscope at any time of the day or night, and get an immediate answer. No appointments. No waiting. No awkwardness. No fear of being judged.

It is fast. It is accessible. It is often inexpensive, and AI is getting very good at sounding like it knows exactly what it’s talking about.

Enter your birth details, ask about marriage, career, money or relationships, and within seconds you can receive an impressively structured interpretation involving planets, houses, planetary periods, transits and remedies. So the obvious question is, Can AI be my full time, personal astrologer?

Before attempting to answer this, I think there is a more important question to ask.

What Can Astrologers do that AI Can't?

If you provide an AI with a:

Birth Date + Birth Time + Birth Place + Question

It has a large amount of input data to work with, from which it can:

• Make astrological calculations.
• Retrieve records and additional data.
• Compare data.
• Generate more information, results.

But a consultation with a real astrologer can bring into focus information that isn't always conveyed by a horoscope. A real life astrologer will often consider if:

• A client has insecurities about other related, or unrelated areas of their life.
• If the question asked is, or is not the real issue at the heart of the matter.
• If there is additional subtext that needs to be addressed while analysing the matter at hand.

For instance, a person asking “When will I get married?”, may actually be asking, “Why has everyone else moved on in life?”

Someone asking, “Will I get a job?” may also be thinking, “Am I in the right profession?”

A horoscope chart is often likened to a map. But unlike any map, it is accompanied by the owner's whole life.

A skilled astrologer is trained to learn to recognise not only what is written in the chart, but what is happening around the chart. That requires observation, context, judgement, communication and emotional intelligence. That is, skills that humans tend to possess, and machines tend to lack.

A Machine Can be Powerful and Still be Deficient

I recently experienced this distinction in a very ordinary situation.

Someone in my family developed an eye infection and used AI for an initial assessment. They uploaded a photograph and answered the AI’s questions. Based on what it could determine, the AI suggested that a serious condition was unlikely, because the person’s eye images did not appear to be particularly red.

Later, this person underwent an optician’s examination and areas that weren't adequately represented in the photograph were also examined. The doctor noticed a concerning degree of redness, and prescribed a proper treatment.

The lesson learnt wasn't that AI is bad, or even that doctors are always better. The lesson was simpler; different tools have different observational boundaries.

AI can be extraordinarily powerful within the information available to it. But sometimes the most crucial information is the information that hasn't been captured.

So yes, AI can be an excellent tool for people who have only a casual interest in astrology, who out of curiosity or entertainment ask questions like, “When will my ex return?” or “How can I make millions from the stock market?” But for those who are relying on astrology to deal with significant life questions or real life problems, it is worth looking beyond quick predictions and seeking a deeper, more responsible form of guidance. Such people require an understanding of their unique situation, and answers that are provided context and clarity, which go beyond the obvious.

What is an Astrologer’s Role if AI does All the Work?

Imagine someone who goes to the gym every day. They start by lifting 20 kg. Then 30. Then 40. Gradually, the muscles adapt to resistance. Strength develops because the body is forced to work.

Now imagine that a machine lifts 100 kg for them every day. They still come to the gym. They still perform their exercises. But the machine is doing the difficult part.

After months of this, what exactly has become stronger? The machine has done its job, but has the person gained in strength? That would be unlikely. Therein lies the question that technology poses for astrologers. Have you improved as an astrologer if the machine is doing all the heavy lifting?

When Difficulty Was a Part of the Training

For generations, learning astrology demanded a fair amount of effort. A student had to learn how to calculate planetary positions, construct charts, understand houses, planetary transits and periods, memorise principles, and then repeatedly practise the art.

Then software arrived. Calculations that once took considerable time could be completed in seconds. That was progress.

Technology removed tedious work and allowed astrologers to concentrate more on interpretation. Then digital libraries made classical texts searchable.

And now, AI can go one step further. It can calculate, retrieve information, compare patterns and generate an interpretation within seconds. None of this is inherently bad.

The problem begins when we forget that some of these difficult tasks were not impediments. They were training.

Making those calculations trained the mind. Memorisation trained our powers of recall. Repeated chart analysis trained pattern recognition. Watching a master interpret charts, trained powers of observation. Making mistakes trained students of the discipline to recheck their findings. And years of practice taught the student something that no single process could; discerning which tasks actually matter.

Astrologers Aren’t Exactly Perfect Either

While this is true, this argument should not become a sentimental singling out of astrologers. I’ll be frank, there are some terrible astrologers out there. But then, there are also terrible doctors, lawyers, teachers and consultants too. Every profession has its share of bad actors.

However, occult practices have a particular vulnerability; the seeker often cannot independently verify whether an interpretation is sound. A confident practitioner can make weak reasoning sound impressive, and AI introduces an interesting psychological twist. We may distrust a human because we can see their biases, but equally, we may trust a machine because we cannot see its. An AI’s answer appears neat, neutral and authoritative. But the appearance of objectivity is not the same as being objective.

AI can misunderstand information, combine incompatible principles or present a speculative interpretation with excessive confidence. A machine doesn't have to be malicious to be wrong. It only needs to appear to be convincingly right.

The Bigger Danger

The real danger may not be that AI replaces astrologers. It may be that astrologers stop thinking for themselves, or stop developing the abilities that AI performs for them. If software calculates every chart, does the student develop the same numerical familiarity? If AI retrieves every classical principle, does the student develop the same memory? If AI produces every interpretation, does the student develop the same level of discernment? If the answer is always available, does the student ever learn how to deal with the uncertainty of working through a difficult chart?

This is where the traditional relationship between student and guru becomes relevant. Study, discipline, service, observation, guidance and, within traditional practice, 'Sādhana' (the attainment of knowledge), are not simply ceremonial additions. They formed part of a long process of developing an accomplished practitioner. This process can sometimes be:

• Slow.
• Frustrating.
• Definitely not everyone's cup of tea.

But then again, resistance was traditionally part of the training.

I Use AI. That is Precisely Why I Am Asking This

I am not writing this as someone isolated from the AI revolution. I use AI extensively. It has helped me explore ideas, structure thoughts, develop creative work and turn possibilities in my head into things I can actually execute.

AI has expanded my capabilities, and I am grateful for that. But I don't want it to replace my ability to think independently. There is a difference between,

AI assists me with tasks.
and, AI did the thinking, and I took the credit.

There is a difference between,

AI helped me analyse the data.
and, AI has become my source of knowledge.

One helps a practitioner become more efficient. The other can produce someone who appears to be competent but lacks genuine expertise.

The Future Is Not Man vs. Machine

I don't think the future of astrology needs to be a war between machines and mankind. We can:

• Let AI calculate.
• Let AI search.
• Let it organise.
• Let it handle repetitive tasks.
• Let it help students explore texts.
• Let it make knowledge more accessible.

But if you want to become proficient enough to take on higher objectives, don't let AI do the intellectual heavy lifting for you. Technology is supposed to remove tedious effort. However, we need to guard against dispensing with the effort that helps us develop.

So, perhaps the question to ask isn't, Can I ask AI for astrological predictions?

Perhaps a better question is, What quality of astrological prediction can I expect when AI plays the role of an astrologer?

Horoscopes are often said to be akin to maps, and AI may be an extraordinarily good map reader. But it requires human intellect to understand why a traveller is asking for directions in the first place. And perhaps that is the skill we must ensure we don't stop building.
