The summer solstice is the more celebrated of the two solstices. In terms of astrology, the period for Cancer begins after the 21st of June and Cancer is, therefore regarded as the zodiac sign for the summer solstice. However, this day is much more than the start of Cancer season. If the history of this day and all the happenings that occur on it are taken into consideration, this is certainly a day worthy of your attention.

What Exactly is a Solstice?

The word solstice is a union of two Latin words, ‘Sol’ and ‘Sistere’. In Latin ‘Sol’ means the Sun, recognisable from other common words that refer to the Sun, such as ‘Solar’. The word ‘Sistere’ means to be still. This refers to the Sun's path as observed from Earth. When this path transverses from its north most point, onto its southerly arc, the Sun will appear to be still when viewed from Earth, producing the summer solstice. This phenomenon takes place around June 21 and this date is commonly referred to as the longest day of the year or Midsummer’s day.

When the converse occurs, the winter solstice is observed. This is regarded as the shortest day of the year and occurs around December 21. The UN observes ‘International Human Solidarity Day’ on December 20, but nothing is observed on the 21st, this is where the summer solstice trumps its winter counterpart.

After 21st of June, days begin to get a little shorter and nights get progressively longer. Spiritually, the summer solstice represents the period when the life force of the solar system is at its peak and darkness is at its lowest point.

The Summer Solstice & Ancient Beliefs

The above cited activities are all a part of the modern era, but the summer solstice has been accorded great reverence in many an ancient monument, as diverse as the Mayan temples of Peru to the colossal sarsen stones of Stonehenge.

The ancient Egyptian pyramids of Giza were built with such foresight and precision that they exhibit a mystifying phenomenon on the longest day of the year. The pyramids of pharaohs Cheops and Khafre are two thirds of the three pyramids at Giza. The Sphinx is positioned in such a manner that on the day of the summer solstice, the Sun sets in the centre of the gap between these two pyramids, when observed from the Sphinx. What’s more, the shape so formed by the Sun and pyramids mimics the hieroglyph for the ancient Egyptian word ‘Akhet’, meaning ‘The sun rising over a mountain’. Now that takes planning! It is believed that the word ‘Akhet’ is reference to something with a deeper spiritual meaning. The image below illustrates how this phenomenon appears.

In the 18th century, five stone astronomical observatories, all by the name of ‘Jantar Mantar’, were built in northern India. These observatories contained instruments, known as ‘Yantras’ for tracking the movement of celestial bodies. Yes, that is the same term used to describe the spiritual talismans that you can find on PowerFortunes. This is because the literal meaning of the word ‘Yantra’, is device and this may have an astronomical, astrological or spiritual use. The ‘Jantar Mantar’ in Delhi contains one such astronomical instrument named the ‘Misra Yantra’. Even today, this stone device can be used to time the longest and shortest days of the year, down to the last second.

The Sun is the leader of beneficent planets and the Sun is at its zenith on Midsummer’s day. While this may not be a day of great astrological significance, ancient knowledge infers that this is a mystical day of great spiritual power. This is a day to rid oneself of old baggage and worries and effect changes and new beginnings. Any new endeavours embarked upon on this day, will have the support of the heavens and thus great things will follow.

This horoscope indicates that the summer solstice of 2022 is accompanied by astrological influences that create a relatively greater feeling of positivity, hope and optimism in the world. This positivity will prevail for a variety of reasons and bring different forms of benefit, for those who wish to take advantage of this influence.

Zodiac Sign Predictions for the 2022 Summer Solstice

The above interpretation for the Midsummer’s day horoscope gives us a general idea of the astrological factors prevalent on this day. This is what these factors mean for each sun sign.

  1. Aries: The malefic Vedic planet, ‘Rahu’ will be placed in Aries on the 21st of June. Unlike most other star signs, Aries will not feel the benefits of this horoscope due to Rahu’s presence. There are struggles and these are scheduled to continue. However, as Mars is favourably placed, Ariens will remain defiant in the face of challenges and will be ready to take them on.
  2. Taurus: Taureans will be one of the signs to benefit from the summer solstice. The ruling planet of this sign, Venus will be exalted in Taurus on this day. This will bring progress and achievement to your mid-term plans, but this will be a gradual process, as Venus will be weak in strength at only 03:39 degrees. As this planet gains strength, greater good fortune will follow. Relying on your innovative creativity and making use of your many talents, will bring you gains.
  3. Gemini: As the Sun occupies Gemini and the ruling planet of Gemini is favourably placed in Taurus, the summer solstice will be favourable for this sign. In fact, people under this sign will be in a more confident, optimistic frame of mind than other signs. Their enthusiasm and willingness to follow their instincts will lead them to good things. Making offerings to the Sun will allow these gains to extend into your mid-term future.
  4. Cancer: As the Moon will be debilitated, Cancerians will go through a short-term downwards phase and they will be short on confidence as a result. However, this situation may encourage you to look for deeper spiritual meaning in your life.
  5. Leo: The ruling planet of your star sign, the Sun will be favourably aligned in Gemini. However an exalted, but retrograde Saturn will aspect your sign. While on the one hand you will be confident and have new career or financial plans on your mind, you will encounter delays and struggles in achieving progress in your objectives. You will find ways to overcome these problems through a combination of confident decisions and decisive planning.
  6. Virgo: Virgo is the ascendant of the chart for the 21st of June 2022, so in a sense, Virgo is the ruling zodiac of this chart and sets the tone of the chart. The planets aspecting Virgo and the alignment of Mercury, are all favourable factors for this sign. Everything looks good for Virgo and there will mostly be harmony and good fortune for this star sign in the short to mid-term.
  7. Libra: Librans will experience mixed fortunes. This is because on the one hand Libra’s ruling planet, Venus is exalted, but Rahu’s twin planet, the also malefic ‘Ketu’, occupies this sign. While there will be success in different areas of your life, there will also be worries and uncertainty about the future.
  8. Scorpio: Come the summer solstice and your ruling planet, Mars will be placed in the friendly zodiac of Pisces along with close ally, Jupiter. Venus will also favourably aspect your sign. This all augments well for success and gains. You will strive to bring about greater progress to your life, especially to your career, but you will be more methodical and sensible than in the past.
  10. Capricorn: This is yet another astrological sign whose ruling planet will be exalted around June 21. However, your ruling planet, Saturn is presently in-retrograde. You have been working persistently towards fulfilling your objectives in recent times. You need to show a little more patience, as a period of stagnation and slow progress is under way. This patience will pay off and good things will come to those who come to terms with the situation.
  12. Pisces: Jupiter will be exalted in the zodiac sign of Pisces, bringing peace, harmony and the possibility of unexpected gains or promotions to the life of the average Piscean. People of this star sign have a natural inclination towards spiritual matters and this will increase during the period of the summer solstice. Due to the presence of Mars, Pisceans will be livelier and more enterprising than usual.
