How to Attract Luck into Your House

Good Luck Charms for the Home
Good Luck Charms for the Home

Good fortune flows in the direction of positive spiritual energy and is retained in a harmonious environment. There are a number of different ambient factors that are known to increase spiritual energy and positive vibrations. For a space to be abundant in positive spiritual energy, it should embody these characteristics:

  1. Bright and Airy

Negative spiritual energy is associated with dark, dank, dingy surroundings. Light drives away darkness and hence, wards off negativity. Keep windows open to allow fresh air to circulate and use natural light as much as possible, because a bright, well-lit, well ventilated space is auspicious. So if the weather permits, draw those curtains and crack open a window or two.

  1. Uncluttered and Tidy

The compulsions of everyday life cause us to sometimes forget that “Cleanliness is next to Godliness”. Don’t be that person. Disorderly, untidy surroundings trap negative energy, hence taking out the trash is akin to removing bad vibrations from your living space. The same applies to dust, grime, dirt, mold, cobwebs, unpleasant odours and excessive damp. In fact, in many parts of the world it is believed that the dirt attached to our shoes introduces outside negativity into our homes. Shoes are for this reason, often left outside.

Hording junk and discarded or broken objects should also be avoided, at least in your main living space. All stopped clocks, even those of a digital variety should either be restored, or removed from sight.

  1. Fresh and Fragrant

Incense, essential oils and scented candles allow a space to be cleansed of negative energy. Scents like rose petals, lavender, sage, sandalwood and jasmine are considered especially good for promoting calm, cleansing and attracting good luck. Filling a space with the fragrance of incense has a purifying effect that allows divine energy to permeate.

Similarly, burning lamps and candles produces fire and light and both elements are sources of positive energy.

  1. Vibrant and Colourful

Colours that are associated with favourable astrological and spiritual energies should be the dominant features of the interior and exterior of a building. Generally favourable colours are white, yellow, red, green and orange. An explanation of the colours that may be suitable or unsuitable for you, according to your horoscope is explained in detail in our article, 'Colours and Astrology'.

  1. Blessed by Nature

Healthy plants bring colour, fragrance and aesthetic appeal to any space and are a natural way to accomplish many of the above requirements. Fresh flowers are symbols of vitality and growth. They purify the air, improve the ambience and are believed to attract prosperity and positive energy. Certain plants are especially suitable for this such as, holy basil (ocimum sanctum), money plants and peace lilies. For warmer climes and space permitting, pomegranate, mango and banana trees are all good choices. Although lucky bamboo is popular according to Feng Shui, bamboo is associated with death according to Vedic traditions and is hence best avoided.

  1. The Sound of Good Fortune

Spiritually favourable sounds such as the chiming of bells, spiritual chants and the reciting of prayers will increase the ambient positivity of any area. It is said that chanting the powerful ‘Mahamrityunjay Mantra’ not only positively charges the immediate area, but the surrounding vicinity too. The energy data for different activities, as given on our page for 'Good Luck Charms' shows that:

  1. The ring of bells produces >11,000 bovis of energy.
  2. Reciting prayers produces >12,000 bovis of energy.
  1. Adorned with Auspicious Symbols

The last, but by no means the least way of attracting good fortune into a home is by placing symbols of good luck on the interior and exterior. There are many categories of such items, such as those prescribed by Feng Shui, Vastu Shastra, astrology and other spiritual practices. In fact, using different types of objects in combination, can prove to be a winning strategy.

Vastu Yantra

'Vastu Shastra' prescribes for the use of a specific talisman for dispelling the negative effects of Vastu faults in a building. This talisman represents the different gods and deities, armed with their weaponry and seated on the Vastu Purush. Placing this in a building helps to eliminate faults, increases the flow of positive energy and has a purifying effect.

Peace & Progress Amulet

The 'Peace & Progress Amulet' or 'Sukh Samriddhi Yantra' attracts harmony and progress and will help to optimise your home's energy flow.

Mahamrityunjay Amulet

Lord Shiva forms part of the divine trinity that also includes ‘Lord Brahma’ and ‘Lord Vishnu’. Lord Shiva is worshipped by all Vedic planets, including the malefic ones. The Mahamrityunjay Mantra is a powerful Sanskrit chant, representative of Lord Shiva.

There are two schools of thought regarding the origins of the Mahamrityunjay Mantra. One belief is that a soothsayer predicted that Markandey, the son of the sage Mrikandu would die at a young age. When Markandey reached the foretold age, he began to chant this Mantra without pause, compelling Lord Shiva to appear before him. Lord Shiva then directed 'Death' away from Markandey and granted the boy a longer lifespan. The other belief is that Lord Shiva imparted the ‘Knowledge of Resurrection’ or ‘Sanjeevani Vidya’ to Venus, who is mentor or spiritual guide to the demonic realm. Lord Shiva revealed this knowledge to Venus in the form of the Mahamrityunjay Mantra.

The Mahamrityunjay amulet is a graphical representation of this Mantra and placing this amulet in your home will protect the occupants from ill health, ill fortune and negative energy. This amulet also appeases the Moon, Saturn, Venus, ‘Rahu’ and ‘Ketu’, as they all bow before Lord Shiva.

The lucky horseshoe

Hanging a horseshoe with the open end facing upwards is a common symbol of protection and good fortune. It can strengthen and appease planets such as Saturn.

The Lord of Good Fortune

According to Vedic mythology, the elephant headed 'Ganpathi' also known as 'Ganesh', is the 'Lord of Good Fortune'. He is the son of the all powerful Lord Shiva and has many different forms. These forms range from the destroyer of obstacles to the bringer of good luck and hence, 'Ganpathi' is worshipped before any important task is undertaken. Placing Ganpathi's amulet in your home, provides good luck with a permanent seat on your premises.

A Laughing Buddha

Laughing Buddha Yantra

The Laughing Buddha, also known as ‘Budai’ or ‘Hotei’, is often depicted as a cheerful, rotund figure with a big belly and a joyous smile. According to Feng Shui such figurines bring positive energy (Chi) and symbolise abundance, wealth and prosperity. A main door facing Laughing Buddha is thought to welcome wealth and happiness into the home.

The 'Om' Symbol

Aum Yantra

'Om' is the sound of the Universe. Chanting this sound is a form of meditation that brings spiritual growth and relieves stress. Placing the physical representation of 'Om' in your home, will have a similar effect and attract positive spiritual energy into your surroundings.

Crystals and Gemstones.*

Crystals and Stones

Certain crystals, like citrine, jade, amethyst and clear quartz, are believed to attract good fortune, prosperity and positive energy.

Rock Salt.*

Rock salt lamp

Rock salt is a desiccant that is, it has a natural ability to absorb moisture from the air. Placing a large chunk of rock salt in the home, is thought to absorb bad energy from the surroundings, cleanse the area and create a sense of stability and grounding. Rock salt lamps, made from large salt crystals, are popular in many cultures. When heated by a light bulb or a candle, these lamps are said to release negative ions into the air. Negative ions are believed to counteract the effects of positive ions (common in electronic devices), which some people associate with feelings of stress and negativity.

Fountains.*

Fountains

The flowing water of a fountain is symbolic of progress, success and inflowing money. Fountains have a purifying and cleansing effect on their environment, refreshing and revitalising the energy of their surroundings. According to the ancient Vedic dwelling science of ‘Vastu Shastra’, the North-East area of a building is an auspicious location for a water feature such as an indoor or outdoor fountain. One important point to consider in the case of fountains is the counterproductive effects of dirty or stagnant water. This symbolises blocked opportunities and attracts negative energy.

Wind Chimes.*

Wind Chimes

Wind chimes are thought to resonate with the vibration of positive energy. Different materials, such as metal, wood and ceramic produce different sounds and vibrations. These different sounds so produced, harmonise each of the five basic elements that is, wood, fire, earth, metal and water. A wind chime should ideally be placed at an entry point, like a door or window to act as a protective barrier against negative energies and unwanted influences.

Astrology vs Superstition

There is both a bit of astrology and superstition where it comes to good luck charms for the home. It is therefore, important to make a distinction between which type of remedy belongs to which type of belief.

Astrology based beliefs about good luck charms generally relate to colour, direction and planetary influence. An analysis of a person’s natal chart can reveal the astrological influences that affect the nature of their household and home environment. That is, the planetary influences on the 2nd and 4th houses of the natal chart determine a person’s fortunes in terms of their household and the immoveable assets. An analysis of these houses would bring to light the amulets and talismans that can improve both areas of life.

Superstitious beliefs about good luck charms generally do not take astrological or cosmic influences into account, but are rather based on traditional beliefs, folklore, cultural customs and in some cases, myths. Such charms are believed to bring good luck or ward off bad luck based on symbolic meanings and historical usage.

Both astrology based recommendations and remedies that have evolved from superstitions, are effective. Ideally, a home or building should house a mix of both.
