In 2021, the United Nations passed resolution 76/76 declaring that every year, the 20th of July is to be observed as, ‘International Moon Day’. This day marks the anniversary of NASA’s 1969 Apollo 11 lunar mission that led Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins to take their famous giant leap for mankind.

The Moon is Earth’s only satellite, but in astrology, this is designated as a planet. Therefore astrologically, the Moon is the closest planet to Earth.

The Sun and Moon belong to the same planetary grouping, have a very strong affinity and are twin positive forces. The Sun is strongly masculine in nature, while the Moon is feminine. One represents night and the other day, we possess both a Sun sign and a Moon sign and hence, these two planets act as counterbalancing astrological forces.

What Day is Moon Day?

This year, International Moon Day falls on Wednesday, July 20, 2022. In astrology, there is no ‘Moon Day’ per se, in that there is no specific day of the year that is dedicated to revering the Moon. This is because the Moon spends only about two-and-a-half days in any one zodiac sign and travels through the whole zodiac from Aries to Pisces, in a little over 27 days, after which it begins its journey again.

It is also important to note that ‘Moon Day‘cannot be referred to as ‘Lunar Day’, as this term is reserved for the duration required for the Moon to complete one revolution about its own axis.

Although July 20 is not a day of astrological relevance the Moon is, and we intend to mark this day by celebrating the characteristics of this important planet.

Horoscope Chart for July 20 2022, International Moon Day

According to the horoscope cast for this day, the Moon will be weak in strength at 29 degrees. This planet will be debilitated, placed in the zodiac sign of Pisces, with an exalted Jupiter.

A debilitated and combusted Mercury is the ascendant’s lord of this chart and this will occupy the 11th house.

The above alignments suggest that this is not a particularly lucky or auspicious day. However, a strong Venus occupies the house of actions and rules over the house of fate and an exalted Sun occupies the house of gains and rules over the house of expenses. This means that this is a great day to seize the initiative and let your creative talents shine. Being enterprising and innovative will bring future progress and gains. There may be a tendency to overspend on this day, but this will enhance one’s prestige and may prove to be productive.

One must try to stay focussed and decisive in order to avoid unnecessary confusion.

Salient Lunar Characteristics

If the Sun is akin to external heavenly influences, the Moon represents our inner feelings and emotions. The Moon has been around for billions of years, but it is not always visible, a reminder that nothing is constant and birth, life and death are cyclical in nature.

The Moon's orbit around Earth changes slightly every month. Each day our celestial neighbour reveals something new to us. The ocean tides change from high to low in response to the push and pull exerted by the Moon. Similarly, our emotional state also tends to ebb and flow throughout the course of a day, due to this planet’s influence. This response varies from day to day and person to person, as each individual is governed by their own astrological make up.

The Moon doesn’t hang about and travels quickly through the zodiac, passing through all 12 signs in under a month. In fact, it's faster than any other planet in your birth chart. The sign that the Moon occupied when you were born, is your Moon sign and is one of the most important factors in determining what kind of person you are and what kind of traits you possess.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord ‘Shiva’, who is considered to be the lord of all gods, carries the waxing crescent of the Moon on his head and wears this as a crown. There are several fables associated with this legend, one being that this was to negate the effects of a curse that would have caused the Moon to fade away completely. The Moon and Lord ‘Shiva’ thus share a very close relationship and Monday is the primary day of the week for worshipping ‘Shiva’. Likewise, worship of the Moon is not complete until Lord ‘Shiva’ has been revered.

The waxing phase of the Moon is considered to be auspicious and any activity that is initiated during this period, will be met with success.

Characteristics of the Moon ☽:

  1. It is exalted in Taurus.
  2. It is debilitated in Scorpio.
  3. It rules over the zodiac sign of Cancer.
  4. It is represented by the number ‘2’.
  5. Beige, ivory and white are its corresponding colours.
  6. It governs the mind, stomach, bladder and the left eye.
  7. Its corresponding talisman is the ‘Chandrama Yantra’.
  8. Its corresponding gemstones are pearls, white corals and moonstones.

How Should we Celebrate Moon Day?

This day should begin with the chanting of the ‘Mahamrityunjay Mantra’ to attract Lord Shiva’s blessings. Your choice of colours for the day should lay emphasis on white, beige and off white.

The Moon is a free spirit that wants us to take a break and appreciate the softer, more philosophical and poetic side of life. Celebrating Moon day means to put mundane worries on the back burner, to whatever extent possible. This is a day to introspect and connect with your innermost passions, the emotions that inspire you to be the best version of yourself.

This is also a day of artistic license, to discover your inner romantic, artist, poet, writer or chef. However during the course of the day, make time to donate white clothes or dairy products to the underprivileged.

The Moon relates to food and indulgence especially dairy products, so end the day by treating yourself to a rich and memorable evening meal.

Happy Moon Day!
